Lyalya was in her work uniform. Meaning, a gypsy skirt, a short shirt with billowy sleeves, dangling earrings, a color hair scarf, bangles that jangled with every motion, and long necklaces that hung to her exposed belly button. More for comfort than show, she wore combat boots: white with flowers painted on them. She had painted the flowers herself. Right now, her shoes were covered by a velvet purple tablecloth that hung over a small round table and pooled on the floor. She itched her left calf with her right foot. Today's customer wanted the whole shabang: cards, palm reading, crystal ball. She must have wanted this engagement pretty badly.
Lyalya cleared her throat and began speaking in her vaguely Eastern European accent. "Now, my friend, your cards are very interesting. The first one, the moon, can mean one of two things. Feminine beauty and the intoxicating vitality of youth on one hand, very good for you. On the other, the metamorphosis from beauty to beast and vice versa. But this is in your past, so it is something for you to reflect on, don't you worry, pretty lady. Now, the present, the deciding element of what is current. Oh dear, it looks a little dire, but don't you worry. Overconfidence, bad investments, and imprudent handing of acquired wealth will shape your present, but it will all turn out dear. The Ace of Wands is your future card. The seed of a new venture is in your future. Perhaps an unseen opportunity to be met with boldness, vigor, and enthusiasm. There you go deary, the future looks bright. Don't you worry your head. Have faith dear."
The woman seemed confused, but handed over a wad of cash and gratefully shook Madam Lyalya's hand. Lyalya waved as the woman walked out of the small office space, clutching her phone. Another satisfied customer. The more confused they were, the less questions they asked. The more vague the reading, the more Lyalya was able to be correct. The college student checked the time. She had enough time for one more reading before class.
"Madam Lyalya will be seeing one more customer before she must rest. The spirits are generous today." she called to the waiting room. Lighting another stick of incense and pouring two more cups of tea, Lyalya sat to wait for her next customer.
